WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) announced the release of the 2018 version of the Ways and Means Green Book. This publication’s official title is “Background Material and Data on the Programs within the Jurisdiction of the Committee on Ways and Means.” Prepared by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) under the direction of the staff of the Ways and Means Committee, this longstanding document has served as a vital archive for lawmakers, program administrators, researchers, and the general public since publication began in 1981.

Upon releasing the document, Chairman Brady said:

“An important component of our Committee’s work, I am glad to announce the release of the Ways and Means Green Book for 2018. For decades this publication has served as an invaluable tool to the public for research and policy making. This edition reflects significant legislative wins for the Committee, which include: strengthening protections for Social Security beneficiaries, addressing opioid abuse, and enacting the Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA) to provide new supports for children both in and at-risk of entering the foster care system.  I want to thank all the folks at the Congressional Research Service who worked to develop this latest Green Book, as well as the Committee staff who have spent many hours on its preparation.”

Background: The Green Book combines a description of key health, welfare, retirement, disability, and related programs under the jurisdiction of the Committee on Ways and Means with current data on these programs, the individuals they serve, and relevant historical information. As of September 2018, CRS reports are now being published directly online, allowing the Green Book to focus on the legislative activity of the Committee. Readers accessing the 2018 Green Book on the Ways and Means website will also be able to readily access electronic versions of the 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016 editions of the Green Book.
