Brady Applauds White House for Standing Up for Faith-Based Foster Care and Adoption Groups

January 23, 2019 — Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – Today, the top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brady (R-TX) released the following statement after the Trump Administration granted a request from the state of South Carolina to protect the religious liberty of its state faith-based foster care providers:

“Faith and family are bedrocks of American society, and our policies need to promote and protect these important institutions.  I applaud this Administration for standing up for these principles by continuing to ensure religious groups can continue to help our country’s most vulnerable find safe and loving homes.  We know there is still work to do, and I stand committed to fighting for every foster and adoptive child and those parents seeking to grow or start a family.”

Background: America is strained for resources when it comes to foster care and adoption services, and many faith-based groups have worked for decades to fill that need.

Rep. Brady and Ways and Means Republicans have fought to ensure faith-based organizations who offer foster care and adoption services are not discriminated against because of their religious affiliations.  Which is why in September 2018, Rep. Brady, along with Ways and Means Republican Members Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), Rep. Diane Black (R-TN), Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL), Rep. Jim Renacci (R-OH), Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), and Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), signed onto an amicus brief in support of the plaintiffs in Fulton v. Philadelphia – a case where the city of Philadelphia barred a Catholic foster care agency from placing children into homes because of the group’s religious convictions.

Today’s actions by the Trump Administration further solidify Republicans’ commitment to helping our children who need it most find loving homes.
