Chairman Jenkins Announces Hearing on IRS and DOJ Efforts to Return Taxpayers’ Seized Funds

June 13, 2018 — Hearing Advisory    — Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) announced today that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) efforts to return taxpayer funds, which the IRS seized using its civil asset forfeiture authority.  The hearing is entitled “Update on IRS and DOJ Efforts to Return Seized Funds to Taxpayers.”  The hearing will focus on the process the IRS and DOJ used to review taxpayers’ petitions for the return of seized funds and the resulting outcomes.  The hearing will take place on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 in 1100 Longworth House Office Building, beginning at 10:00 AM.

Upon announcing the hearing, Chairman Jenkins said:

“For far too long, the IRS seized property from Americans in cases that were not warranted. Over the past two years, the Oversight Subcommittee has investigated the IRS’ civil asset forfeitures and I remain committed to ensuring fair outcomes for those whose funds were wrongfully seized. It is troublesome that similarly situated taxpayers appear to have been treated very differently depending on who reviewed their case. I look forward to discussing ways the process can be improved so the IRS can serve as a resource that the American people count on going forward.”
