More Good News: SSI Recipients Will Receive Automatic CARES Act Payments

April 15, 2020 — Coronavirus Bulletin

Key points:

-In another pro-taxpayer move by the Administration, the Treasury Department announced today that Americans who receive Supplemental Security Income won’t have to do any extra paperwork to receive relief payments as part of the CARES Act.

-SSI recipients will receive these payments the same way they receive their normal benefits.

The details:

Payments of up to $1,200 are reaching Americans at a record pace. Across the county, people are beginning to see financial relief thanks to the CARES Act. The Trump Administration announced today that Americans who receive SSI with no children will receive these payments too without filing any extra paperwork.

This action, by the IRS with help from the Social Security Administration, builds on work the Administration did to ensure that Social Security beneficiaries receive automatic payments.

“SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic,” Secretary Mnuchin said. “Recipients with qualifying children should use the ‘Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here’ web portal to enter basic information so they can receive their payments as quickly as possible.”

SSA has clarified that these payments will not count as income for SSI recipients and are excluded from resources for 12 months. Have more questions regarding SSI? CLICK HERE.
