Ways and Means Republicans: More Work for Americans, Less Partisanship from Democrats

January 16, 2020 — Blog

Republican Members of the Ways and Means Committee led the charge in delivering wins for the American people this week. From fighting for better trade deals to calling out Democrats for their partisan politics, check out what GOP Members have been saying.

Rep. Kevin Brady, the top Republican on the Committee, joined Fox Business to talk about the phase one trade agreement with China.

“I do think ‘historic’ is the right term here. It addresses many of the priority issues China long-insisted they would never discuss. Secondly, it puts us on a level playing field in many of our key industries – that means jobs for American workers for the long term,” said Rep. Brady.

Rep. Jackie Walorski sat down with Marketplace to discuss how USMCA will grow Hoosier jobs.

“I think getting USMCA done was a huge victory for all of us, for the American farmer, for manufacturers, and just my district alone, because we lead in exports, and we manufacture all kinds of things. It’s good for Americans, it’s good for my district and I am very, very pleased that this thing is moved through,” said Rep. Walorski.

Rep. Darin LaHood joined Fox Business to talk about the phase one trade deal with the U.S. and China.

“China has been ripping us off in the technology space for the last 25 years. But what happened in phase one here is we put tangible dispute resolution mechanisms in there, but we’ve also put in consequences if and when China violates that,” said Rep. LaHood.

Rep. Jodey Arrington wrote in Fox Business that the phase one trade deal with the U.S. and China is “a monumental achievement for farmers and ranchers” in Texas.

”As a representative from West Texas – the food, fuel, and fiber capital of the United States – I can tell you the pain from China’s retaliatory tariffs is real for both farmers and the small towns they call home. . . . In the long run, we must seek to offset the Chinese export market by tapping into new markets and reaching new customers,” wrote Rep. Arrington.

Amidst these historic days for trade, Rep. Tom Reed went on CNN to call out Democrats, who have presented no impeachable offenses, for distracting from the real work Congress should be doing.

“Impeachment should be the last tool. . . . That’s where I hope we can get this behind us as soon as possible,” said Rep. Reed.
